The first ever Mississippi Wildlife foundation shoot was a definite success. Four schools participated and included Franklin County, Tylertown, Columbia Academy, and Poplarville. Franklin County High School defeated Tylertown with a score of 2979 to 2836. Poplarville finished 3rd and Columbia Academy followed in fourth. The team scores are calculated by taking the top 12 archers and 4 must be of the opposite gender. Franklin County High School had 6 boys and 6 girls in their top 12 archers. It is anticipated that this shoot will be larger next year, because there will be more schools participating and it will precede the ASA shoot in Hattiesburg. Franklin County will also be hosting a large shoot of 8 or more schools next year. The middle school archers and the high school archers can participate under the Mississippi High School Activities Association and the Mississippi Private School Association. The participating staff expressed a desire to encourage the Mississippi Bowhunters Association to sponsor a shoot for 2010. It was felt that such a shoot has the potential to be a big fund raiser. The 2010 shoot could even include the 4-6 graders. They would actually participate as an archery club. Hosting a North Shoot and a South Shoot on two different Saturdays is being considered. The participating schools would shoot for free and you charge the spectators $5.00. Banners from sporting goods/archery stores and other vendors could be displayed for a fee. Mississippi Bowhunters Association staff member Todd Haygood currently has four students that are buying bows for 3D's and for hunting due to this program. One student of Todd already has purchased a bow and the appropriate bow accessories. Todd also has a daughter who is 14, and she currently does not hunt. She now wants to try bowhunting. Todd bought her a Missions Menace bow by Matthews.
Needless to say this program has great potential and a significant amount of enthusiasm was evident as expressed by the shooters representing the participating schools.
